Laxman Savadi: A senior politician today opted to join the Congress after meeting with leaders who said it was their duty to accept “such great leaders” on board, days after the BJP withdrew him as a contender in Karnataka. In Bengaluru this morning, former Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi met with state Congress leader DK Shivakumar and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The gathering was held in Siddaramaiah’s house. A day after the BJP unveiled its initial slate of candidates for the May 10 Karnataka election, Laxman Savadi left the party on Wednesday.

According to sources, the Congress may field Laxman Savadi, whose defeat would be a blow to the BJP “There isn’t a prerequisite. He considers himself to have been humiliated. We must get such outstanding leaders into the Congress party. More than nine or ten currently serving MLAs want to join us, but there isn’t enough room for them,” according to DK Shivakumar. After former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, Laxman Savadi is a prominent Lingayat politician and was the BJP’s second-most influential member from the group in Karnataka. On Wednesday, the 63-year-old three-time MLA said he had “made a strong decision” and had begun working on it, although he did not say whether he was in talks with the Congress.

“I’ve made up my mind. I don’t like to walk around asking for money. I am an honorable politician. I am not acting as a result of anyone’s pressure, Laxman Savadi assured reporters. Mahesh Kumathahalli, the Congress candidate, defeated Laxman Savadi in the Athani constituency during the 2018 election. Despite a significant issue in 2012 after he was seen watching porn in the legislature, he was rewarded for his contribution with the position of Deputy Chief Minister when the Congress-Janata Dal Secular government was overthrown by the BJP a year later. The BJP’s candidate in Athani this time is Mahesh Kumathahalli, one of these defectors.
