Lok Sabha Result 2024: Congressman Rahul Gandhi won the Rae Bareli seat in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday after seven hours of voting, more than double the margin that the sitting MP and his mother Sonia Gandhi had with her opponent in 2019. With more than 670,000 votes, Rahul won.
Sonia Gandhi Victory in 2019
Sonia defeated Dinesh Pratap Singh in 2019 by a margin of 1,67,178 votes, thereby retaining the Gandhi bastion of Rae Bareli. Rae Bareli opened its Phase 5 EVMs and vote boxes for the Lok Sabha 2024 elections on May 20. Sonia Gandhi, the Congress MP now serving in the Rajya Sabha, made the decision not to run for the Lok Sabha.
Rahul, who was defeated in Amethi in 2019, was put forward as a contender for Rae Bareli in an attempt to capitalize on the Gandhi family’s historical influence in the area. Sonia had made the following appeal to the crowd during a rally before the seat’s elections: “Your love never left me alone. I am entrusting my son to you. The way you considered me as your own, now you have to see Rahul as your own. He will not disappoint you,” said Sonia. She called Rae Bareli’s permission to serve for thirty years her “biggest asset” in life. She stated there was a “100-year link” between her family and the constituency.
History of Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency
The Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency, which was created in 1952 and is a prominent parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh, is well-known for being a Congress stronghold. For almost ten years, Indira Gandhi, one of the nation’s most powerful prime ministers, occupied this position. But Sonia, who represented Rae Bareli in the last five Lok Sabha elections (including the 2006 by-elections), is regarded as the constituency’s most successful leader to date.
