Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has strongly criticised the Mamata Banerjee government over the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, highlighting a growing sense of insecurity among medical professionals and women across India. His comments came in response to the tragic incident that occurred last Thursday night, which has sparked widespread outrage.

Rahul Gandhi on Kolkata Rape Case

Gandhi did not hold back in his criticism of the way the issue has been handled, addressing the nation for the first time since the horrible crime was made public last Thursday night. He brought attention to the increased fear that women and doctors are experiencing and raised concerns about their safety in establishments like hospitals and schools that are meant to be safe havens.

“The entire nation is in disbelief over the barbaric assault and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata. As the horrifying details of this inhumane act emerge, a cloud of fear looms over doctors and women across the country,” said Gandhi, who serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Accusations of Shielding the Accused

Rahul Gandhi also criticised the alleged efforts to shield the accused. He stated, “The attempt to save the accused instead of providing justice to the victim raises serious questions on the hospital and the local administration. This incident has forced us to think that if doctors are not safe in a place like medical college, then how can parents send their daughters outside for studies? Why are even the strict laws made after the Nirbhaya case unsuccessful in preventing such crimes? Every party, every section of the society will have to hold serious discussions and take concrete steps on the continuously increasing incidents against women from Hathras to Unnao, and from Kathua to Kolkata. I stand with the victim’s family in this unbearable pain. They should get justice at all costs and the culprits should be given such a punishment that it is presented as an example in the society.”

Protests and CBI Investigation

On Friday, inside the chest department’s seminar hall at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the post-graduate trainee doctor’s body was found, with significant marks of injuries. She had been sexually assaulted brutally, according to the first autopsy report. The matter has caused doctors and medical students to demonstrate in large numbers, and as a result, the Calcutta High Court ordered the Central Bureau of probe (CBI) to take over the probe.

Allegations of Evidence Tampering

The West Bengal Doctors’ Forum wrote to the CBI on Tuesday, claiming that renovation work being done close to the crime scene was an attempt to tamper with the evidence. Demands for a comprehensive and unbiased investigation are becoming louder by the day as a result of these accusations, which have only heightened widespread outrage.
