Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition and Congress leader, has been critical of the central government. He has now launched a new attack on the administration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gandhi has said that Modi is financially exploiting common Indians, alleging that people’s “empty pockets” are getting further depleted under the so-called “Amritkaal” that PM Modi is administering. This allegation comes after a report that showed banks had amassed a whopping ₹8,500 crore in fines from customers in the previous five years.
Rahul Gandhi’s Statment on Social Media
On his social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi wrote: “In the Amritkaal of Narendra Modi, the ’empty pockets’ of common Indians are also being extracted. The government that waived off Rs 16 lakh crore of its industrialists has collected Rs 8,500 crore from poor Indians who are unable to maintain even the minimum balance.” He further stated, “The ‘penalty system’ is the door of Modi’s Chakravyuh through which an attempt is being made to break the back of the common Indian. But remember, the people of India are not Abhimanyu, they are Arjun, they know how to answer your every atrocity by breaking the Chakravyuh.”
Reason Behind Gandhi’s Criticism
Rahul Gandhi’s remarks come in response to a recent report detailing the financial penalties imposed by banks. According to the report, over the past five years, banks have earned ₹8,500 crore from penalties. The report reveals a 38% increase in penalty amounts related to maintaining minimum balances in government banks. Finance Minister Pankaj Chaudhary confirmed this information in a recent statement. Data indicates that out of 11 government banks, six have imposed penalties on customers for failing to maintain the minimum quarterly average balance. It’s important to note that the minimum balance requirements vary between urban and rural areas.
