Notification has been issued regarding the election of the Mayor of Delhi Municipal Corporation. According to the notification, there will be a meeting of the House in MCD on 26 April. Mayor and deputy mayor will be elected in this meeting. After the release of the notification, candidates can now file nominations. The process of filing nominations will end on April 18. After this, voting will be held on April 26 for the election of mayor and deputy mayor.
Earlier, the mayor’s election was held in February, in which Shaili Oberoi of the Aam Aam Party defeated Rekha Gupta of the BJP. On the other hand, the post of deputy mayor was also won by AAP’s own candidate Aale Mohammad Iqbal. However, due to AAP getting a clear mandate in MCD, Delhi BJP is unlikely to field a candidate in the mayoral election. A top leader of the party said this on Tuesday.
The BJP functionary said, “We have not considered fielding any candidate in the mayoral election. We don’t have enough votes to win.”
Shaili Oberoi may again become AAP’s candidate
On the other hand, AAP’s outgoing Mayor Shailli Oberoi is expected to be made the candidate for this post again. Earlier, an official had told on April 3 that till the election of the new mayor, the outgoing mayor Oberoi would continue in this top post. Earlier it was told that the new election of the mayor in Delhi could be held by the end of April.
Mayor’s election is held every year in Delhi
Significantly, Delhi gets a new mayor after the end of the financial year. Elections to the post of Mayor in Delhi are held on an annual basis for five years, with the first year reserved for women, the second year for the open category, the third year for the reserved category, and the remaining two years again for the open category.
