Milind Deora Resigns from Congress, Closes Family Legacy of 55 Years

Milind Deora: On Saturday, Milind Deora announced his resignation from the Congress party. Deora verified the development with X, writing, “Today marks the conclusion of a significant chapter in my political journey.”

Acknowledging Support Over the Years

“I have tendered my resignation from the primary membership of Congress, ending my family’s 55-year relationship with the party,” he wrote. “I am grateful to all leaders, colleagues & karyakartas for their unwavering support over the years.”, he added. On Saturday, Deora had refuted the rumour that he was on his way out and would join the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. He referred to these as “rumours”.

Milind Deora Engages in Talks Amidst Speculation

Deora told reporters that he is having talks with his followers, despite having lately voiced his disapproval over the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) laying a claim to the Mumbai South Lok Sabha constituency. “I am listening to my supporters… Haven’t taken a decision yet,”  the former Mumbai South MP replied when asked if he and his followers were formulating a strategy.

In response to a question about allegations circulating in certain media outlets that he was leaving the Congress to join Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, he stated that these were rumours.

Deora Dissatisfied with Shiv Sena’s Mumbai South Claim

The Congress politician is not happy with the Uddhav Thackeray-led group’s claim to run in the forthcoming general elections for the Mumbai South constituency, which Deora represented prior to 2014. Deora stated in a video message released on Sunday that his party would also be able to declare candidates for seats if the “alliance partner” continued to make such claims.

Congress-NCP-Shiv Sena Coalition

In the Maha Vikas Aghadi, the Congress and the NCP (Sharad Pawar group) are allies with the Shiv Sena (UBT). Deora had stated that no one should launch accusations and counterclaims as the formal negotiations about seat sharing have not yet been finalised.

Deora, who was elected to the Mumbai South constituency in 2004 and 2009, is the son of longtime Congressman Murli Deora. In the ensuing elections in 2014 and 2019, he lost to Arvind Sawant, the leader of Shiv Sena (Undivided), and came as first runner-up.
