Uddhav Thackeray, the leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday during an event in Mumbai to commemorate the 57th anniversary of the Shiv Sena’s founding, criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not travelling to the conflict-torn Manipur. Thackeray claimed that while the prime minister is travelling to America, the “double engine” government—a metaphor frequently used by the BJP to describe the party holding both the national and state governments—has “derailed” in Manipur.
Thackeray Challenges Modi’s Priorities Amidst Manipur Crisis
“I was rebutted with reasons like ‘one should not spit at the Sun’ when I questioned why Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anxious on visiting the US but not the burning Manipur. Why isn’t your ‘guru’ shining over Manipur if he’s like the Sun, he questioned. Since May 3, Manipur has been plagued by interethnic violence over a court-proposed change to the state’s reservation system that gives the erstwhile scheduled tribe (ST) status. Army and paramilitary personnel have been sent to the northeastern state to reestablish peace. In an effort to avoid misinformation from spreading throughout the state, the local authorities enforced a curfew in 11 areas and prohibited internet use.

Thackeray Questions BJP’s Inaction in Manipur
“Where is the Manipur double-engine government? It appears to have lost steam. He poked fun at Modi by saying, “Only one engine (referring to Union Home Minister Amit Shah) visited Manipur; where is the other one?” Thackeray further criticised the former ally’s philosophy, claiming that attacks on Hindus are evidence of the Hindutva failure of the BJP. We were not instructed by our Hindutva to rejoice when BJP officials were attacked in Manipur. The Hindutva philosophy of the BJP has failed if Hindus are being assaulted, whether in Kashmir or Manipur, according to the former Maharashtra chief minister.Thackeray cited a social media post by retired Lt Gen L Nishikanta Singh from Manipur who compared the current plight of the northeastern state to Libya, Lebanon, Nigeria, and Syria.

Singh claims that the state is currently without a state. In a dig at the PM and his Sunday radio programme, Thackeray remarked, “His worry is not my Mann ki Baat, but Manipur ki Baat. “We don’t like it when the residence of a BJP state minister (RK Ranjan Sigh) is set on fire. Our Hindutva does not teach anything like this. No BJP fan should endure the heat of a burning section of the nation, according to our Hindutva,” the ShivSena (UBT) chairman argued.
