MP News: Jitu Patwari has been named as the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee president, effective immediately, by Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge. Patwari took over for outgoing PCC president Kamal Nath upon his induction. Congress stated in a press note on Saturday that, ” Congress President has appointed Jitu Patwari as the President of Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee, with immediate effect. The party appreciates the contributions of outgoing PCC President Shri Kamal Nath.”
Umang Shingar Takes Charge as Leader of Opposition
In the Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha, Umang Shingar was named as the Leader of Opposition and Hemant Katare as the Deputy Leader of the Congress party in the official release from the Congress. Patwari, a 49-year-old MLA representing Rau, was also serving as the campaign committee chairman for the Madhya Pradesh Congress. In 2018, he defeated Rau for the second time to win the election. Following that, Patwari was appointed to the position of Minister of Youth and Sports Affairs in the government headed by Kamal Nath.
Patwari’s 2018 Appointment Amid Kamal Nath’s Leadership Change
In 2018, Patwari was named working president following Kamal Nath’s appointment as chief of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC). He was named chairman of the Congress’s state media cell by Nath in April 2020. Many party members think Patwari is on Rahul Gandhi’s good side. However, Madhu Verma of the BJP defeated Patwari in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections of 2023, taking Rau from the Congress by a margin of 35,522 votes.
Party Acts Following Kamal Nath’s Announcement
The decision by the party was made a few days after Kamal Nath, the chief of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee, announced that he was not prepared to end his political career in his Chhindawara constituency. “I am not going to retire. I will be with you until my last breath. Let’s see how high your electricity bills go under the BJP government!” Kamal Nath had said. After winning 163 seats in the 230-member Assembly on November 17, the BJP maintained its hold on power in Madhya Pradesh. The Congress, on the other hand, only managed to secure 66 seats, down from 114 in 2018.
