Sonia Gandhi, from the Congress, praised Sanjay Singh, a member of the Aam Aadmi Party, today for the way the opposition handled the Manipur problem in the House of Representatives. This action was seen as a new indicator of the improved relations between the once-hostile parties. The INDIA alliance has set a camp outside of the legislature and is requesting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi make a statement on the matter in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. They staged a candlelight protest last night next to the Gandhi statue.
A video of the interaction was tweeted by Mr. Singh. “Former Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi met and said on the movement being run by Team INDIA against Manipur violence, “My support is with you,” read a rough translation of his Hindi caption.
The protest sit-in is being led by Mr. Singh, who was suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the remainder of the session due to opposition protests on Manipur.
Conducting this amid a heavy downpour today, he tweeted: “Second day of the protest. Heavy rain! Perhaps God is also crying over the condition of Manipur. The question is only on one Manipur, when will Modi ji speak in the Parliament?” he tweeted earlier.
MPs from the AAP and other opposition parties accompanied him, many of whom could be seen carrying “INDIA for Manipur” signs. One of the requests of the demonstrators is for Mr. Singh to be reinstated in the upper chamber.
The opposition’s request for the prime minister to address the House regarding the situation in Manipur has not been complied with by the government.
According to sources, the state in the northeast has experienced severe bloodshed before. When unrest broke out in the state in 1993 and 1997, however, no prime minister had visited. Parliament did not discuss it, and there was just one case, the minister of state for Home had said in a statement.
Manipur’s situation is currently under control, and no one has been killed in acts of violence in the previous 15 days. According to sources, the government has decided that the Home Minister will be the sole one to address the Manipur crisis.
