There will be no election of the Congress Working Committee (CWC). Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has been authorized to choose the CWC, the highest policy-making body of the party. A decision in this regard was taken in the 85th Congress session. In this way, the confusion has been cleared from the question arising on the most important agenda regarding the formation of the CWC. This was unanimously decided in the meeting of the Congress Steering Committee held at Nava Raipur on Friday. This information was given to the media by Congress’s media in-charge general secretary Jairam Ramesh.
Mallikarjun Kharge to appoint members
Ramesh said that it was unanimously decided in the Steering Committee that there will be no CWC elections, rather the Congress President will nominate the members of the CWC. Ramesh said that the CWC elections were widely discussed in the steering committee meeting. Some members were in favor of elections. But, when the resolution authorizing the Congress President was passed unanimously, its question ended. Ramesh said that in view of the current political situation and the challenges faced by the Congress being the main opposition party in the country, the decision was taken not to hold the CWC elections.
45 Members participated in the meeting
Earlier, while addressing the committee, Kharge said that all of you should openly speak about the CWC elections. 45 members participated in the meeting which began at 10 am on the first day of the convention. Apart from authorizing Kharge in this two-and-a-half-hour meeting, the proposal to amend the Congress constitution regarding the CWC was also discussed. In this regard, Ramesh said that under this, there is a proposal to amend 16 provisions of the Congress constitution and 32 rules.
He said that we are bringing an amendment in the Congress constitution, under which it is proposed to ensure and secure 50 per cent representation for Dalits, Tribals, OBCs, women, youth and minority communities in the CWC. Also, it was proposed that the Prime Minister belonging to the Congress, the former Prime Minister, the leader of the party in both Houses of the Parliament and the former President of the Congress would be permanent members of the CWC.
According to sources, with this the number of CWC members may increase from 25 now to 30 or 31. At the same time, there is also a provision in the Congress constitution to authorize the president to conduct elections to the CWC or to nominate members.
According to sources, all the 45 members kept their point in the meeting. In this, some leaders like senior leaders and Rajya Sabha MPs Digvijay Singh, Ajay Maken and Abhishek Manu Singhvi supported the elections in the meeting.
