Pakistan Election 2024: Pakistan, which is having difficulty recovering from an economic crisis, suffered yet more setback when the election results were inconclusive. Days of political horse-trading are now ahead for the nation as parties attempt to put together leaders who will demonstrate their majority.
Imran Khan’s Political Comeback
Despite being imprisoned and prohibited from running for office, Imran Khan made news when independent candidates endorsing his Pakistan Tehreek-Insaf (PTI) party secured 102 seats in the country’s general elections.
However, the party was still 31 seats shy of securing the majority required to create government. The outcome of the eight seats is not yet known. The Pakistan Election Commission has blamed internet problems for the delay, which is causing polling places to have trouble transferring the results.
Poll Favorites’ Dilemma
With the support of the Army and as the clear favourite in the polls, Nawaz Sharif‘s Pakistan Muslim League (N) was only able to secure 73 seats out of the assembly’s 266 members. 54 were won by Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Yesterday’s declarations of victory by Khan and Nawaz Sharif, the three-time former prime minister, raised doubts about who will form the next government at a time when prompt policy action is required to solve a number of issues.
Imran Khan’s Popularity
The 241 million people living in the country, many of whom are trying to make ends meet in the face of Asia’s fastest inflation, continue to hold a great affection for former prime minister Imran Khan, as evidenced by the independents’ impressive performance.
A number of independents, supported by PTI, have petitioned the high court, accusing them of manipulating the election results. Over the following several days, a number of additional candidates may file court petitions claiming that the votes were manipulated, according to sources from the local media. PTI is also anticipated to start widespread demonstrations today since the election’s official results have not yet been made public.
Pressing for Transparency
The PTI’s chairman, Gohar Khan, urged “all institutions” in Pakistan to uphold the party’s mandate. During a press conference, he declared that the party would stage nonviolent demonstrations outside of government buildings today to demand the release of the full poll results by Saturday night.
Nawaz Sharif and Bilawal Bhutto are in talks to work together in an attempt to prevent Imran Khan‘s party from gaining control of the nation’s highest office. However, despite their combined might, they will be six seats short of the majority.
