Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair an open debate on the issue of maritime security at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) today. The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that this meeting, to be held through video conferencing, will start at 5:30 pm Indian time.
Prime Minister Modi will be the first Indian prime minister to preside over an open debate of the United Nations Security Council, the statement said. It aims to strengthen its position on strategically important sea routes.
The PMO said that Narendra Modi will be the first Indian Prime Minister to chair the open discussion of the United Nations Security Council. At the heart of this open discussion will be maritime crime and increased cooperation in this area. In the past also UNSC has discussed various aspects of maritime security and maritime crime and passed several resolutions. However, this will be the first time that a high level and open discussion on the subject will take place in an in-depth manner.
The PMO said that no one country can worry about different aspects of maritime security. Therefore, it is important to pursue it as a comprehensive subject in the UNSC. Maritime security must have a comprehensive approach to protect legitimate maritime activities and at the same time deal with both traditional and non-traditional threats to the maritime domain.
President of Niger, President of Kenya, Prime Minister of Vietnam, US Secretary of State Antoine Blinken, President of Congo can also take part in this discussion. Russian President Vladimir Putin will also be a part of this discussion.

India is chairing the UNSC for the month of August this year. India has also taken over this responsibility from August 1. The United States, China, Britain, Russia and France are the only five permanent members in the UNSC. At present India is a non-permanent member of the Security Council for two years.
