PhonePe: Digital payment provider PhonePe protested to the usage of its brand in the Congress-created posters accusing Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan of corruption that appeared throughout Bhopal. The Congress put up Shivraj Singh Chouhan posters all over the capital city of Bhopal amid a poster war between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress in the election-bound state of Madhya Pradesh, accusing him of getting work done in exchange for money.
Unauthorized Usage of PhonePe Logo in Political Posters
The posters with a QR code with Chouhan’s face read, “50% laao, PhonePe kaam karao (pay 50% commission to get your work done)”. On Monday, PhonePe responded to the posters on Twitter and demanded that the posters remove its logo. PhonePe Twitted, ” PhonePe objects to the unauthorized usage of its brand logo, by any third party, be it political or non-political. We are not associated with any political campaign or party.”
PhonePe Asserts Trademark Rights and Threatens Legal Action
Writing on Twitter PhonePe added, “The PhonePe logo is a registered trademark of our company and any unauthorized use of PhonePe’s intellectual property rights will invite legal action. We humbly request @INCMP to remove the posters and banners featuring our brand logo and colour.”
Home Minister Accuses Congress of ‘Dirty Politics’ Amid Poster Controversy
Narottam Mishra, the home minister for Madhya Pradesh and a prominent member of the BJP, also responded to the posters the Congress had put up criticising the state’s chief minister, claiming that the Congress was participating in “dirty politics” and that PhonePe’s tweet regarding the posters had said everything that needed to be said. “The dirty politics of Congress has come to the fore. Nothing to say after the ‘Phonepe’ tweet,” he said as quoted by news agency ANI. He maintained that the BJP was not responsible for creating or disseminating posters that accused senior Congressman Kamal Nath of corruption. “BJP engages in clean politics and does not do dirty tricks like Congress,” he said. Narottam Mishra added, “The public knows that you [Congress] are blaming others to hide your corruption. FIR has been registered in Burhanpur, Chhindwara and will take action against it.” The Congress has previously claimed that the Shivraj Singh Chouhan posters were a retribution for the Kamal Nath posters.
