Wrestlers Protest: The eagerly anticipated elections for the Wrestling Federation of India will be held on July 6, according to a notification sent out on Tuesday by the returning officer. The declaration comes a day after Mahesh Mittal Kumar, a retired high court judge, was named the returning officer by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to start the election process. Additionally, it was informed that the election results would be released on the same day. June 19 has been set as the deadline for receiving two nominations from each state and union territory to make up the electoral college, and the scrutiny will be finished by June 22.
Electoral College Composition and Nomination Process for WFI Elections
Each state unit may send up to two representatives, each of whom will be allowed one vote. Therefore, there will be 50 votes in the electoral college for the WFI elections. However, it has been learned that a few state organisations that the WFI had previously disbanded have made their claim to take part in the elections. The returning office will determine who is eligible to vote and who is not after reviewing the representatives of the factions’ credentials. The process of submitting nominations for elections will begin on June 23 and end on June 25, after which the nominations will be prepared and shown. On June 28, the nomination papers will be scrutinised. Between June 28 and July 1, candidates will have the option to withdraw their nominations. On July 2, the final list of candidates will be made public.
Exclusion of Brij Bhushan Singh’s Family from WFI Election Candidacy
Despite being eligible, the family of outgoing WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh will not run in the federation elections, dependable sources told PTI on Tuesday. Elections for the Wrestling Federation of India’s president, senior vice-president, four vice-presidents, secretary-general, treasurer, two joint secretaries, and five executive members will take place on July 6. The protesting wrestlers had suspended their protest until June 15 after Sports Minister Anurag Thakur told them that neither Singh’s family members nor his cronies would be permitted to run in the upcoming elections.
