Pramod Sawant on Monday was sworn in as Goa’s chief minister for a second straight term, which comes 18 days after the poll results were announced in the coastal state.
The grand oath event – attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi – turned out to be another show of strength for the BJP after Yogi Adityanath was sworn-in in front of a 70,000 plus crowd on Friday.
The oath-taking ceremony was held at Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee stadium in Panaji, in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP president JP Nadda, and chief ministers of several BJP-rules states, among other dignitaries.
Vishwajeet Rane, Mauvin Godinho, Ravi Naik, Nilesh Cabral, Subhash Shirodkar, Rohan Khaunte, Atanasio Monserrate, and Govind Gaude also took oath as ministers.
Around 10,000 people attended the function, which was broadcast across Goa via several news channels.
Sawant (48), an Ayurveda medical practitioner and three-time MLA from Sankhalim in North Goa, who considered Parrikar as his mentor, was on Monday sworn in as the chief minister for a second term.
This would be the second time that Goa’s chief minister will be sworn in outside the Raj Bhavan premises. In 2012, Manohar Parrikar had taken oath as the CM at Campal ground in the state capital Panaji after the BJP emerged as the single largest party in the House. Meanwhile, Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai has summoned a two-day session of the new Assembly from March 29 during which Sawant will have to seek a vote of confidence.
