Political strategist Prashant Kishor recently expressed his views on the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) reliance on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Kishor highlighted the potential risks associated with the BJP’s overdependence on PM Modi, emphasizing the need for a broader strategy beyond individual leadership.
Modi: The BJP’s Achilles’ Heel?
In an interview with the Indian Express, Kishor expressed his belief that the BJP’s “biggest risk” lies in its excessive dependence on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity. He stated, “It is overdependence on PM Modi that is their biggest problem now.” This assessment suggests that while Modi remains a formidable force, his leadership might not be the invincible shield the BJP perceives it to be.
Beyond Mandal and Ram Mandir
When asked about the potential impact of issues like Mandal and Ram Mandir in the upcoming elections, Kishor acknowledged their significance but emphasized that PM Modi’s persona would likely overshadow them. He claimed, “The votes will definitely be around PM Modi. Yes, the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya is big, but if you remove PM Modi from the equation, even the BJP will agree that it would not have been as effective as it is.” This statement highlights the immense influence Modi wields and the potential vulnerability the BJP faces if that influence wanes.
Who After Modi?
Kishor further sparked debate by speculating about the BJP’s post-Modi leadership. He expressed concerns, stating, “Whoever it is, will be more hardliner than he is… He/she would make Modi look relatively liberal than what he/she is going to be.” This prediction paints a picture of a potentially more hardline leadership within the BJP, raising questions about the party’s future direction and its impact on Indian politics.
Kishor’s Candid Advice for Congress and the Opposition
Kishor didn’t shy away from offering his insights to the Congress party as well. He urged them to undergo a significant transformation, stating, “I had told them that they would need to re-incarnate themselves.” He emphasized the need for consistency and focus, advising them to “stick to one belief and strive towards dispensing that message.” Additionally, he pointed out that while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi enjoys high social media reach, his messaging needs improvement to connect effectively with the masses.
Kishor also commented on the Opposition’s INDIA bloc, expressing skepticism about their commitment. He stated, “If the Opposition parties were serious enough, they should have come together much earlier and did a lot more than they did since June 2023…All the INDIA alliance has done from June 2023, when they first met, to now is conduct closed-door meetings.” This criticism highlights the need for a more unified and proactive approach from the Opposition if they hope to challenge the BJP effectively.
