Votings for the presidential polls are over now and the Election Commission officers were seen boarding their flights for their return journey to Delhi from different states with the ballot boxes having separate tickets for the same. The officers of the Election Commission of India (ECI) sent the ballot boxes to 14 state capitals and union territories for the presidential polls that just concluded and for the journeys, the ballots had their separate tickets named ‘Mr Ballot Box’.

Prior to this, the boxes were used to be sent as hand baggage by the officials but for this year the case was not the same. The Election Commission booked two-way tickets for the Ballot boxes. The security was tight and the officers were seen occupying seats adjacent to the boxes.

On the day of vote counting, which is 21 July, these ballot boxes will play a significant role in deciding who will be the next President of India between Draupadi Murmu and Yashwant Sinha.
But now the question emerges what was the reason behind these ballot boxes being transported on separate tickets?
In a press statement issued last week, the Election Commission of India said, ” The Ballot Box has a prominent role in the process of presidential elections — being no ordinary box, as it is to hold the fate of the highest office of the largest democracy on the planet. Thus, the mandated procedure specifies special caution during the transportation, storage, and use of these boxes. Particularly for the conduct of presidential elections, the process also involves a fascinating journey of the Ballot Box reaching every state capital.”
“During transportation, the Ballot Boxes fly on a separate air ticket booked in the name of ‘Mr Ballot Box’ seated in the front row of the aircraft beside the seat of the officer transporting the materials under personal supervision,” they further said.
