PM Modi went on a surprise visit to the new Parliament House on Thursday (March 30) late evening. He spent more than an hour and inspected various works. He observed the facilities coming in both the Houses of the Parliament.
The PM also interacted with the construction workers. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was also present with the Prime Minister. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the new Parliament House on 10 December 2020 in a program in New Delhi.
The program was attended by leaders of various political parties, cabinet ministers and ambassadors of various countries. The new building is expected to be completed by October 2022 for the winter session of Parliament. The area of the new parliament will be 64,500 square meters.
Construction going on under Central Vista Project
The central government launched the Central Vista redevelopment project in 2019, which includes the construction of a new parliament building, along with other projects in New Delhi. The shape of the new complex will be triangular.
The new building is designed for a lifespan of over 150 years.
The seating capacity of members in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will increase
The proposed chambers for the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha will have a larger seating capacity to accommodate more members than currently in place, as the number of MPs may increase with India’s growing population and consequent future delimitations.
The new building will have 888 seats in the Lok Sabha chamber and 384 seats in the Rajya Sabha chamber. Unlike the present Parliament House, it will not have a central hall.
In case of a joint session, the Lok Sabha chamber will be able to accommodate 1,272 members. The rest of the building will have 4 floors with ministerial offices and committee rooms.
