The very severe storm on Sunday intensified into an extremely severe storm, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an alert for the Gujarati beaches of Saurashtra and Kutch.
IMD Issues ‘Yellow’ Advisory as Cyclone Biparjoy Approaches Gujarat Coast
Due to Cyclone Biparjoy, the IMD on Sunday evening issued a “yellow” advisory for Gujarat in its bulletin. “Yellow Message: Cyclone Alert for Saurashtra & Kutch Coast. At 1730 IST on June 11, in latitude 18.6N and longitude 67.7E, the ESCS BIPARJOY was over the east-central Arabian Sea. It was expected to traverse between Mandvi, Gujarat, and Karachi, Pakistan, by noon on June 15. Officials at the Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla near Gujarat’s Kutch have begun moving people from low-lying regions to makeshift shelters amid the cyclone alert. Om Prakash, the Deendayal Port Authority’s public relations officer, told news agency ANI that six ships have already departed the port and 11 more will do so on Monday. He continued by saying that alertness has also been requested from port officials and ship owners. As cyclone Biparjoy’s intensity grew on Sunday night, some areas of Mumbai and Maharashtra saw rain and high gusts.

High Alert Issued in Pakistan as Cyclone Biparjoy Poses Threat to Coastal Areas of Sindh
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in Pakistan has also issued a high alert to the relevant authorities due to the likelihood that the cyclone may hit the coastal parts of Sindh on June 13. As part of its efforts to track and assess the tropical conditions in the UAE and their potential effects on the nation, the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) organised a series of meetings of the Joint Assessment Team handling weather and tropical conditions on Sunday. Since the wind speed near the centre increased to a range of 165 to 175 km/h, the NCEMA confirmed that tropical cyclone Biparjoy has been categorised as Cat-2, according to ANI. Additionally, it stated that during the next five days, the cyclone would not affect the UAE and is forecast to continue heading northeast and north towards the coast of India and Pakistan.
