Punjab News: Punjab is set to hold municipal elections, with stringent security arrangements in place to ensure smooth polling. State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhuri announced on Thursday that out of 1,609 polling stations, 344 have been declared hypersensitive and 665 sensitive.
Key Details of the Elections
The elections will cover:
- Five municipal corporations.
- 44 municipal councils/nagar panchayats.
- Byelections for 43 wards of municipal councils and six wards of municipal corporations.
In total, 3,717 polling booths will be set up for the elections.
Massive Deployment of Security Forces
To maintain law and order, 20,486 personnel from the Punjab Police and home guards will be deployed across polling stations. In addition, 500 patrolling parties and 283 striking reserves will be on standby to address any emergencies.
Comprehensive Security Arrangements
Chaudhuri outlined several measures to ensure safety and prevent illegal activities:
- 74 second-line defence nakas (checkpoints).
- 87 interstate nakas.
- 257 inter-district/intra-district nakas.
These checkpoints will focus on curbing the flow of illicit liquor, cash, drugs, and the movement of anti-social elements.
The state election machinery is working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure free and fair elections, emphasizing the importance of voter security and the integrity of the electoral process.
