The Congress Working Committee (CWC), the highest decision-making body of the party, passed a resolution on Saturday to appoint Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. This decision emerged from the extended CWC meeting, where the newly-elected parliamentarians unanimously supported Gandhi for the role.
“CWC unanimously requested Rahul Gandhi to take the position of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha. Rahul ji is the best person to lead this campaign inside the Parliament,” KC Venugopal, Congress general secretary in charge of the organisation, announced at a press conference following the meeting.
Key Takeaways from the CWC Meet
- Rahul Gandhi’s Leadership: Senior Congress leaders, including Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor, have strongly advocated for Rahul Gandhi to assume the position. Shivakumar expressed the collective desire of the party members, stating, “We want Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of Opposition in the Parliament. Rahul Gandhi said to us today that we should win the hearts of people who did not vote for us.”
- Historical Context: This marks the first time since the Congress’s defeat in 2014 that the party will hold the post of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. The party had previously been unable to secure the position in both 2014 and 2019 due to not meeting the required 10 percent of total seats in the House.
- Future Decision: KC Venugopal mentioned that Rahul Gandhi will make a decision on accepting the role very soon, highlighting that the final call rests with Gandhi himself.
- Support from Senior Leaders: Shashi Tharoor praised Gandhi, calling him the “man of the match” of the Lok Sabha elections, and emphasized that the position should be occupied by a leader who is undeniably the most popular within the party.
The appointment of Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of Opposition is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the party’s position and lead an effective campaign inside the Parliament.
