Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said that consent is one of the underrated concepts in society and women’s rights, amidst the hearing in the Delhi High Court on petitions to consider marital rape as a crime. It should be paramount to ensure safety.
The Congress leader made these remarks amid a hearing in the Delhi High Court on PILs filed by NGO RIT Foundation and All India Democratic Women’s Association. The petitions have been requested to do away with the exception made to husbands under the law related to rape.
Some men’s rights organizations have also filed petitions opposing the petitions seeking quashing of the exception, saying there is no question of discrimination and Parliament upheld the provision, taking into account the holistic view of Indian society, Rahul Gandhi tweeted using the hashtag ‘marital rape’ and said that consent is one of the underrated concepts in our society. To ensure the safety of women, it should be kept paramount.
