An influential Indian-American lawmaker Friday said senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha was a “deep betrayal” of Gandhian philosophy. Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha on Friday. A Surat court convicted him in a defamation case.
Disqualification will bar Rahul Gandhi from contesting polls for eight years
In a tweet, Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna wrote, “Rahul Gandhi’s expulsion from Parliament is a deep betrayal of Gandhian philosophy and India’s deep-rooted values. This is not what my grandfather sacrificed years in jail for.” Khanna represents Silicon Valley in the US House of Representatives.
Ro Khanna, who is co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans, has sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention on the issue. Ro Khanna said in another tweet, “You have the power to reverse this decision for the sake of Indian democracy.”
Following his disqualification from Parliament, four-time MP Rahul Gandhi, 52, will not be able to contest elections for eight years unless a high court stays his sentence. Meanwhile, George Abraham, vice-president of the Indian Overseas Congress USA, termed Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification as a sad day for democracy in India.
George Abraham said, “It is a sad day for democracy in India. By disqualifying Rahul Gandhi, the Modi government is sounding the death knell for the right to free speech and liberty of Indians everywhere.”
“Bringing a trivial matter to court against a comment in a political campaign is shameful and not in keeping with the spirit of the Constitution regarding freedom of expression,” he said.
Surat court convicts Rahul Gandhi in Modi surname remark case. Rahul has been sentenced to two years. Although he got bail from the court, but he lost his membership from the Lok Sabha.
