The incident occurred when the Congress leader was leaving the Lok Sabha building and Union Minister Smriti Irani‘s speech was in progress; it was not caught on camera. Witnesses said that as Rahul Gandhi was leaving the Lok Sabha building after delivering his statement in support of the no-trust vote, he dropped a few papers, and as he bent over to pick them up, a few BJP MPs began laughing at him. They claimed Rahul Gandhi gave the BJP MPs a kiss before leaving.
Smriti Irani Condemns Rahul Gandhi’s Gesture as Misogynistic and Obscene
Lashing out at Rahul Gandhi over the flying kiss, Union Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Irani said, “Only a misogynistic man can give a flying kiss to women MPs in Parliament. Such an instance was never witnessed before. This shows what he thinks of women. This is obscene.” Shobha Karandlaje, the Union Agriculture Minister, also criticised the Congress MP for the flying kiss and reported Gandhi’s conduct to the Lok Sabha speaker as “inappropriate.” The complaint letter was signed by many female MPs. Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday for the violence in Manipur and claimed that the government had “divided” the northeastern state into two halves. Rahul Gandhi stated that while he visited the violent state of Manipur, the Prime Minister did not during the no-confidence motion discussion against the PM Modi-led government. “A few days back, I went to Manipur. Our Prime Minister didn’t go, not even to this day, because for him Manipur is not India,” he said. The Congressman claimed that PM Modi was a “traitor” rather than a “nationalist” since he “murdered India” in Manipur. “They killed India in Manipur. Not just Manipur, but they killed India. Their politics has not killed Manipur, but it has killed India in Manipur. They have murdered India in Manipur,” he said.
Smriti Irani Challenges Rahul Gandhi’s Manipur Remarks, Calls his Attitude Unacceptable
Rahul Gandhi’s comments on Manipur were disputed by Union Minister Smriti Irani, who claimed that Rahul Gandhi’s attitude in the House was unacceptable and that this was the first time the “murder of Bharat Mata” had been discussed in Parliament. Her comments followed Rahul Gandhi’s claim that the BJP had “murdered Bharat Mata in Manipur”. The BJP MP from Amethi pointed guns at the Congress in her ferocious speech and declared, “They are not India.” Irani was alluding to the new name for the opposition group, INDIA. Shobha Karandlaje, a BJP MP and union minister, along with other female party members, filed a complaint against Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla over what they claim to be the congressman’s “indecent” behaviour and “inappropriate” gestures towards union minister Smriti Irani. At the Speaker’s chamber, Shobha Karandlaje delivered the letter, signed by 21 female BJP members, calling for harsh punishment against Rahul Gandhi. “We demand stringent action against such behaviour by the member, which has not only insulted the dignity of the women members in the House, but also brought disrepute and lowered the dignity of this House,” the letter read.
