In a notable incident that stirred political controversy, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi had a heartfelt encounter with a vegetable vendor named Rameshwar. This meeting became a subject of debate as it was interpreted by some as a means of political exploitation. The encounter began with Rahul Gandhi’s request to be addressed by his first name rather than a formal title, signifying an attempt to establish a more personal connection. This gesture was captured in a video released by the Congress party.
Rameshwar, who hails from Uttar Pradesh and had come to Delhi in search of a better life, shared his struggles with Rahul Gandhi during their conversation. He recounted his disappointment over the deteriorating conditions he faced in the city. Particularly, an emotional moment occurred during an interview with The Lallantop, a news outlet, where Rameshwar broke down while discussing the exorbitant prices of tomatoes. This heartfelt breakdown resonated with many viewers on social media.
Before meeting, Rameshwar said it was “Bharat milaap” or “Sudama meeting Krishna” and then started his journey to Rahul Gandhi’s residence, as captured in the video.
The video of Rameshwar’s emotional interview caught the attention of several political leaders, who expressed sympathy for his plight and shared the video on various social media platforms. Rahul Gandhi, among other Congress leaders, responded to the video, acknowledging Rameshwar’s struggles.
Rahul Gandhi extended an invitation to Rameshwar to visit his residence, where they shared a meal together. The Congress party shared the full video of their conversation, further emphasizing the human connection they were trying to establish with Rameshwar’s story.
“What work you have done in the last 10 years?” Rahul Gandhi asked Rameshwar. “There is no manual labour that I did not do. Now I don’t have that much energy left in me…but I don’t see any result of my hard work because the government does not listen to anyone. The poor are being destroyed and the rich are getting richer,” Rahul Gandhi said.
“Will you have food?” Rahul Gandhi said to Rameshwar and then served him and his family food
“The moment you start speaking the truth, you will be attacked. You should not think about others,” Rahul Gandhi said explaining his ‘Nyay scheme’ to him.
However, the incident was not without its share of criticism. The BJP accused Rahul Gandhi of exploiting Rameshwar’s situation for his own political gains. This led to a back-and-forth between the two major political parties.
BJP said alleges Rahul Gandhi
“…Rameshwar ji says he has no knowledge about social media but also talks about meeting Rahul Gandhi himself. Did someone tell him to say this? Who wants to meet Rahul Gandhi in India today except the operatives of the Congress party?” BJP’s Amit Malviya said.
“You talk and meet a poor person who comes to your home by putting on a mike only when you want to exploit his poverty,” Malviya added.
Rameshwar’s story also took on another dimension when it was revealed that he had received free cooking gas cylinders under Prime Minister Modi’s Ujjwala scheme, as per a separate interview he had given. This added a layer of complexity to the narrative, highlighting the intricacies of various government initiatives aimed at aiding individuals in need.
In response to Rameshwar’s emotional interview, not only politicians but also public figures from other domains, such as Bollywood actor Vijay Varma, expressed their desire to help him in his challenging circumstances.
Overall, the encounter between Rahul Gandhi and Rameshwar became a focal point of public discussion, bringing to the forefront the intersections of politics, social issues, and the complexities of individual experiences in the context of broader government schemes.
