Retired bureaucrat Arun Goel has been appointed as the Election Commissioner ahead of the crucial assembly elections in Gujarat. The third post in the country’s top election body has been lying vacant for nearly six months.
President Draupadi Murmu has appointed Arun Goel, IAS (Retd.) as Election Commissioner in the Election Commission with effect from the date he assumes office, said a Union Law Ministry release on Saturday evening. Arun Goyal, a 1985 batch Punjab cadre officer, will join the election panel along with Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar and Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey.
Election panel has been a two-member body since May
Sushil Chandra retired as the Chief Election Commissioner in May this year, after which Rajeev Kumar took over. The election panel has been a two-member body since May and was supposed to handle several important issues, including the demand for disqualification of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
Who is Arun Goel
Punjab’s senior-most IAS officer Arun Goel tendered his resignation 40 days before his retirement. He was on deputation to the Center for several years. He was holding important responsibilities in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Arun Goel is a 1985 batch IAS officer. He was to retire on December 31, 2022.
His resignation was accepted by the Punjab and Central Government on the same day. It is very rare that the file from home cadre to PMO is cleared in a single day. For this reason there was a discussion in the entire bureaucracy about his resignation.
