Sanjay Raut’s judicial custody extended by 14 days in money laundering case

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray) faction leader and MP Sanjay Raut has once again got a setback from the court. Mumbai PMLA Court has extended Raut’s judicial custody for 14 days. Along with this, the PMLA court will pronounce the verdict on his bail plea on November 9. He is currently in jail in the case of money laundering. Raut was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on August 1 in a money laundering case related to alleged irregularities in the redevelopment of Patra Chawl in Mumbai.

Significantly, he is currently in judicial custody. The ED has alleged that irregularities to the tune of Rs 1,034 crore were committed in the name of chawl redevelopment or to get a rented house in Goregaon, and that Raut’s wife and his associates are allegedly involved in money transactions related to it.

Spread over 47 acres in suburban Goregaon, Patra Chawl is also known as Siddharth Nagar and has 672 tenant families. In 2008, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) awarded the contract for the redevelopment of the chawl to Guru Ashish Construction Private Limited (GACPL), a subsidiary of HDIL (Housing Development and Infrastructure Limited).

GACPL was to build 672 flats for the tenants and some flats were to be given to MHADA. He was free to sell the remaining land to private developers. However, according to the ED, the tenants did not get a single flat in the last 14 years as the company did not redevelop Patra Chawl, but sold pieces of land and Floor Space Index (FSI) to other builders for Rs 1,034 crore.
