Sharad Pawar: Just one day after NCP leader Ajit Pawar joined the Shiv Sena and BJP-led Maharashtra government, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar spoke at a public gathering in Karad, Maharashtra, and said that some groups are dividing people in the state and the country over issues of caste and religion. In his speech, he urged the crowd to combat the forces that threaten to divide the nation and Maharashtra along racial lines.
Sharad Pawar Expresses Concerns Over BJP’s Tactics and Communal Divide in Maharashtra
He made a suggestion that his nephew Ajit Pawar might join the BJP and said, “Some of our people fell prey to BJP’s tactics to break other parties. Attempts are being made to create communal divide in Maharashtra and the country. We need to fight forces that create fear among peace-loving citizens. We need to protect democracy in the country,” as reported by PTI. He added, “We were serving Maharashtra under Uddhav Thackeray but our government was toppled by some people. The same happened in some other parts of the country too in c, Punjab and West Bengal where the governments are working democratically, are being attacked,” as reported by ANI. He paid a visit to the Preeti-Sangam memorial of Yashwantrao Chavan, the first chief minister of Maharashtra, who served as his political mentor. He had Prithviraj Chavan with him.
NCP Submits Petition for Disqualification of Defected Leaders, Challenging Ajit Pawar’s Switch to BJP
NCP’s Maharashtra president Jayant Patil said, “We have sent a petition to the Assembly speaker last night. We requested him to hear us. Our party’s strength in the Assembly is 53, of which 9 have defected, the rest all are with us. We will give them a fair chance to come back but will take action against those who do not come back” Ajit Pawar’s unexpected switch to the saffron party before the next Lok Sabha and assembly elections completely altered the political landscape in the state. He took the oath of office as the second Deputy Chief Minister, joining the Eknath Shinde-led administration together with eight other NCP MLAs. The Sunday surprise occurred as the opposition was attempting to unite in opposition to the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections. Eknath Shide reacted angrily to this development by criticising NCP leader Sharad Pawar, claiming that although some people were talking about “googly,” everyone could see who had been clean bowled. It’s a hit wicket, he added. This is hardly a brand-new administration; PM Modi oversaw the Shiv Sena and the BJP government at the time. Development work was going on and Ajit Pawar who believed in the development work, supported and joined the government.” NCP has submitted a petition for disqualification against its nine leaders. When informed of this, NCP leader Jayant Patil stated, “We have filed a disqualification petition with the Speaker of the Assembly and we will deliver hard copies as soon as feasible. This petition for disqualification was submitted against nine leaders. He continued by saying that the Election Commission of India has also received a letter.
