On Tuesday, DK Shivakumar, the deputy chief minister of Karnataka, made a stinging statement against chief minister Siddaramaiah that caused a stir. Shivakumar, who was defeated by Siddaramaiah for the position of chief minister after the Congress won handily in the Assembly elections, said that he would have carried out a project that Siddaramaiah had been “scared” to start during his previous term.
“In the previous Siddaramaiah government, they wanted to build a steel bridge, but there was a massive uproar over it. At that time, Siddaramaiah got scared and backed down from the project,” Shivakumar said, adding he would have gone ahead with the project.
The Basaveshwara Nagar to Hebbal steel flyover project, which faced opposition after its announcement in 2017, was the subject of the deputy CM’s comment. Later, the project was abandoned.
The statement is being made as Congress presents a united front in Karnataka following its unexpected victory in the just-concluded Assembly election. After the victory, negotiations dragged on for several days since both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar coveted the top position.
In the end, Siddaramaiah was chosen by the Congress as the chief minister, and DK Shivakumar was chosen as his deputy. “I am a happy man. We must accept the judgement because that is what it is, he had remarked.
However, the BJP has been emphasising since the government took its oath of office that fissures will start to show and the Congress government will inevitably fall.
State minister Priyank Kharge on Shivakumar’s remark said, “I wouldn’t say that Siddaramaiah got scared. The chief minister is sensitive to public opinion. Sometimes, false narratives get floated and good decisions are delayed. I think that is what the deputy chief minister meant.”
