Sitaram Yechury: The CPI(M) general secretary and former Rajya Sabha MP Sitaram Yechury passed away at the age of 72. After an extended illness, he passed away on Thursday. At AIIMS, Delhi, Yechury was undergoing treatment for a severe respiratory tract infection. A group of medical professionals were caring for him in the intensive care unit, where he had been on respiratory support.

Sitaram Yechury took over as the general secretary of the CPI(M) from Prakash Karat in 2015. He was a key figure in the party’s leadership. Yechury learned from late leader Harkishan Singh Surjeet.
