Sitaram Yechury: The CPI(M) general secretary and former Rajya Sabha MP Sitaram Yechury passed away at the age of 72. After an extended illness, he passed away on Thursday. At AIIMS, Delhi, Yechury was undergoing treatment for a severe respiratory tract infection. A group of medical professionals were caring for him in the intensive care unit, where he had been on respiratory support.

Sitaram Yechury’s Leadership in CPI(M) and Political Journey

Sitaram Yechury took over as the general secretary of the CPI(M) from Prakash Karat in 2015. He was a key figure in the party’s leadership. Yechury learned from late leader Harkishan Singh Surjeet. Surjeet played a significant role in coalition governance during the National Front and United Front governments. The CPI(M) supported these governments from outside.

Sitaram Yechury made notable contributions during his tenure. He played a major role when the Left parties supported the first UPA government. His influence was felt in policy decisions during this time. He was also instrumental in the talks on the Indo-US nuclear deal. This deal led to the CPI(M) withdrawing support from the UPA-I government due to internal disagreements.
