Sonia Gandhi: Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was unanimously elected as the chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) on Saturday. This development came shortly after the Congress Working Committee (CWC) passed a resolution urging the appointment of Rahul Gandhi as Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha. Rahul Gandhi, the newly re-elected MP, is expected to make a decision on the matter soon.
“Kharge ji proposed the appointment of Sonia Gandhi as the chairperson of the CPP during today’s meeting. We have unanimously elected her as the chairperson of the CPP. Now the CPP chairperson has to decide about the leader of the Lok Sabha,” said Congress leader Manickam Tagore after the meeting.
Historic Context and Recent Developments
Since 2014, the Lok Sabha has functioned without a Leader of Opposition as no party managed to secure the requisite seats to assume the role. However, in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, Congress candidates defied analyst expectations by securing 99 seats. This marks the first time since 2014 that Congress is eligible to hold the LoP role, as an opposition party requires at least 10% of the total seats in the House.
Appreciation for Rahul Gandhi
Sonia Gandhi expressed her gratitude towards Rahul Gandhi, acknowledging his efforts and resilience. “Rahul deserves special thanks for his tenacity, determination to fight unprecedented personal, political attacks. Bharat Jodo Yatra and Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra were really historic movements which rejuvenated our party at all levels,” she said.
Unanimous Support
The nomination of Sonia Gandhi as CPP chairperson was put forward by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge during the meeting and was seconded by party leaders Gaurav Gogoi, Tariq Anwar, and K Sudhakaran. The proposal was eventually passed unanimously.
The Congress party now looks forward to Rahul Gandhi’s decision on accepting the role of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, which is anticipated to further strengthen the party’s position and influence in Parliament.
