Tejashwi Yadav: RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav has launched a scathing attack on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, questioning the efficacy of the state’s liquor prohibition policy and alleging massive institutional corruption. In a tweet, Yadav termed the prohibition a “super flop,” blaming it on the Chief Minister’s weak willpower and over-reliance on select officials rather than elected representatives.
Key Allegations Made by Tejashwi Yadav
- Institutional Corruption: Yadav called the liquor ban a small example of Nitish Kumar’s institutional corruption. He accused the Chief Minister of having unclear policies and poor execution, leading to a thriving illegal liquor trade worth over ₹30,000 crore, facilitated by a nexus between ruling leaders, the police, and liquor mafia.
- Manipulation in Seizures: He questioned the authenticity of the official data showing 3.46 crore liters of alcohol seized despite the ban. According to Yadav, corrupt officials fake seizures by catching broken trucks or containers filled with other substances while allowing real consignments of illegal liquor to pass.
- Fatalities Due to Illicit Liquor: Yadav highlighted that, while the official count of deaths due to illegal liquor is over 300, the reality is much worse. Thousands have allegedly been killed, and he asked who should be held responsible for these deaths.
Questions Raised to Nitish Kumar
- Accountability for Seized Liquor: If such large quantities of liquor are being seized every year, Yadav asked who is responsible for allowing this flow of illegal alcohol.
- Deaths Due to Illegal Liquor: He questioned why no stringent action has been taken against those responsible for the deaths caused by illegal liquor.
- Police Accountability: Yadav inquired whether any senior police officers, such as superintendents, have ever faced action for their role in the ongoing smuggling.
- Failure in Enforcement: The RJD leader highlighted that if liquor is found in Patna, it implies that it has passed through multiple districts, indicating a failure in law enforcement across those regions.
- Corruption in Officer Postings: Yadav alleged that liquor mafia influence officer postings in border districts through open bidding, and asked whether this claim is true.
- Disproportionate Arrests: He pointed out that most of those arrested under the prohibition laws are from poor and marginalized communities and questioned why.
- Action Against Senior Officials: Yadav demanded to know how many officers of DSP rank or higher have been punished or dismissed for their involvement.
- Daily Raids Ineffective: Despite over 6,600 daily raids, liquor smuggling continues, and Yadav asked who should be held accountable for this failure.
- Chief Minister’s Accountability: Lastly, Yadav questioned whether Nitish Kumar, who is also the state’s Home Minister, would take responsibility for these failures. He also pointed out that most of those caught violating the prohibition law belong to the ruling JDU party.
