Telangana Elections: With party leader Rahul Gandhi speaking to a crowd in Khammam on Sunday, the Congress is ready to announce the results of the election in Telangana, according to news agency PTI.

Leader of the Congress State Legislature Party (CLP), Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, will wrap up his “padyatra” at the Congress rally on Sunday. He started his 1,360-kilometer foot march in Adilabad and travelled that distance in 108 days.

Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, a former Khammam MP who recently announced his decision to join the Congress, would be welcomed into the party during the gathering. Recently, Srinivas Reddy and former minister Jupally Krishna Rao made their intentions to join the Congress public.

When reviewing the preparations for the rally on Friday, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president and MP A Revanth Reddy predicted that the gathering will draw more attendees than the previous public meeting held in the town by the ruling BRS.

The Congress is doing all possible to ensure that the Rahul Gandhi rally is a tremendous success in order to influence the Telangana assembly elections, which are expected to take place later this year. The BJP, which is attempting to position itself as an alternative to the BRS in power, is also a threat that the party is attempting to fend off.

Since the state of Telangana was created in 2014, Congress has been the primary opposition party there. However, over the past several years, the BJP has won two assembly byelections and performed well in the elections for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), posing a threat to the Congress’s status as the primary opposition force.

Thirty-five party leaders, including former MP Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and former minister Jupally Krishna Rao, joined the Congress earlier this week, dealing a serious blow to K Chandrashekhar Rao’s Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in Telangana.

The move, according to Congress leader Supriya Shrinate, was a hint that Congress would constitute the future Telangana administration.

“A whole host of very senior leaders in Telangana have today joined the Congress party. This is a big boost for us, a sign of how the winds of change have travelled all the way to Telangana. It’s a sign that Congress will form the next government in Telangana,” Shrinate said.
