In Maharashtra, the Election Commission has given the name of the Shiv Sena party and the election symbol of bow and arrow to Uddhav Thackeray’s rival Eknath Shinde. A day after this, on Saturday, former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray made a sharp attack on the Election Commission. Uddhav Thackeray said, “The Election Commission is a slave of PM (Narendra) Modi. He has done something that has never happened before.”
Uddhav Thackeray Urges His Supporters To Be Patient For Next Elections
Uddhav Thackeray urged his supporters to be patient and prepare for the next elections. Significantly, the elections of Mumbai’s urban body BMC are going to be held soon. Uddhav Thackeray addressed a large crowd. Party workers staged a show of strength outside Matoshree, the home of the Thackeray family.
Uddhav Thackeray stood outside by opening the sunroof of his car. By addressing the people in this manner, he followed the tradition of his father Bal Thackeray. Bal Thackeray used to address followers from the roof of his car in the early days of the party.
Uddhav Thackeray targeted Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, saying that the party’s election symbol has been “stolen” and the “thief” needs to be taught a lesson.
Uddhav Thackeray’s team urged the Election Commission to wait for the Supreme Court’s decision in the matter. He has said that he will challenge the decision in the apex court. The hearing of the case of tussle between the two factions of Shiv Sena over the authority over the party is going on in the Supreme Court.
Eknath Shinde revolted in the party in June 2022
Eknath Shinde revolted in the party in June 2022. They took more than 40 Shiv Sena MLAs along with them with the help of BJP. The BJP along with Eknath Shinde finally toppled Uddhav Thackeray’s government. Thackeray’s government also included two ideologically different allies, the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party.
A long battle went on to control the Shiv Sena. The Election Commission, in a 78-page order, said Shinde had the support of MLAs in the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections with the party securing 76 per cent of the winning votes. The Election Commission said that the Uddhav Thackeray faction can keep the name of the party ‘Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray’ and the election symbol given last year ‘Dhadakti Mashal’.
Eknath Shinde called the Election Commission’s decision a “victory for democracy” and welcomed the move. Protesting against Uddhav Thackeray calling him a “traitor”, he said he needs to “introspect”.
