Udhayanidhi Stalin, a Tamil Nadu minister and DMK leader, slammed the AIADMK and the BJP after the former decided to leave the NDA partnership. He stated that both parties may run for office again since “one is a robber and the other is a thief.” Despite the AIADMK’s break with the BJP, he predicted that the DMK would win the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Strong Critique of AIADMK-BJP Alliance and Predictions for Elections
“KP Munusamy has announced that the AIADMK-BJP alliance is over. Irrespective of whether you (AIADMK) have an alliance with the BJP or not, it is the DMK which is going to win. You cannot deceive people. Your own AIADMK cadres are not going to trust this. Why? This is because there are ED cases pending against your former Chief Minister and ministers,” Udhayanidhi Stalin said at a DMK youth wing public meeting in Krishnagiri district. He added that, “This is not happening for the first time. They (AIADMK and BJP) might pretend to fight but during the time of elections, they will come together again because one is a robber and the other is a thief.”
AIADMK’s Breakup with NDA
The AIADMK severed ties with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Monday during a meeting at the party’s headquarters in Tamil Nadu, citing “unnecessary remarks about AIADMK’s former leaders” by the BJP. The decision to call it quits comes just days after senior AIADMK leaders met with BJP chief JP Nadda in Delhi and briefed him on the state’s predicament as a result of the BJP’s Tamil Nadu chairman K Annamalai’s “aggressive style of politics.” They then requested that Annamalai apologies for making a statement regarding Dravidian icon CN Annadurai and that he be replaced if he did not.
AIADMK’s Independent Path
The AIADMK, led by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, announced a separate campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Annamalai had refused to apologise for his contentious remarks about the previous Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and insisted that his party and the AIADMK were not at odds. He maintained he had not talked badly of Annadurai and had merely recounted a 1956 occurrence.
AIADMK’s Exit from NDA and Continued Support for Annamalai
According to BJP insiders, the party would not persuade the AIADMK to reconsider its decision to leave the NDA and will continue to support Annamalai. As allies, the AIADMK worked with the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
