Udhayanidhi Stalin: Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi’s comment about social and caste-based prejudice in the state was addressed by Udhayanidhi Stalin, the minister of youth affairs and sports for the state, on Monday. He asserted that all people are equal by birth and that it is necessary to “eliminate Sanatana” Dharma.
RN Ravi and Udhayanidhi Align on Caste Prejudice Concerns
RN Ravi stated that social prejudice is still a concern in Tamil Nadu during a gathering on Sunday in Thanjavur. When asked about it, Udhayanidhi said, “We are also saying what he (the Governor) is saying. That’s why we are saying we have to eliminate Sanatana. We are also speaking about caste discrimination and we are saying by birth all are equal.” “Wherever there is caste discrimination, it is wrong. We are raising our voice against that,” news agency ANI quoted him as saying.
Decrying Social Prejudice and Caste Discrimination in Tamil Nadu
The governor of Tamil Nadu stated on Sunday that social prejudice exists and is intolerable. “We have untouchability, social discrimination. A large section of brothers and sisters are not treated equally. It is painful, it is unacceptable. It is not what the Hindu Dharma says. Hindu Dharma talks about equality,” news agency PTI quoted him as saying. He asserted that Tamil Nadu is still a place where social prejudice still exists, saying, “Every day I read in the newspaper, I get the report, I hear the tale of our brothers and sisters from scheduled caste are not being allowed admission to the temples. I’m amazed and shocked by this weird situation. Our young folks don’t have caste bands (on their wrists) anywhere in India or Bharat.”
DMK Spokesperson Accuses Governor of Promoting Sanatana Ideology
DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai responded to Ravi’s comments by accusing the governor of “indulging in false propaganda.” “He is not able to stomach the growth the Dravidian model of governance has achieved. He is against Dravidian ideology, propagates Sanatan ideology. Wherever he goes, he speaks about the virtues of Sanatana Dharma, but Sanatana Dharma is responsible for this caste system.” “If we have division in society, it is because of Sanatana Dharma,” he said. On Monday, Udhayanidhi repeated his former position on the matter that had aroused controversy and called for the abolition of Sanatana. On September 2, Udhayanidhi claimed that the Sanatana Dharma needed to be wiped out since it was like dengue and malaria. He later emphasised, however, that contrary to what the BJP claims, he did not call for the annihilation of adherents of Sanatana Dharma.
