Gujarat minister Jagdish Vishwakarma on Saturday criticized the voters of Vadgam over the defeat of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate at the hands of Congress’s Jignesh Mevani in the recent assembly elections. He alleged that the people of the seat reserved for Scheduled Castes in Banaskantha district have ‘betrayed the country’ by not ensuring BJP’s victory. Reacting sharply to this statement of the BJP minister, Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani said that the ruling party should also learn to accept defeat.
Mevani said that the voters of Vadgam would ensure the defeat of the BJP in the coming elections as well
Jagdish Vishwakarma is the Minister of State for Cooperation, Salt Industry, Protocol and MSME Departments in the Bhupendra Patel government. Vishwakarma, on being welcomed by the villagers during his visit to Warnawada village of Vadgam during the day, said that ‘those who are responsible for the BJP’s defeat have actually betrayed the country’. You welcomed me, garlanded me, but let me tell you that instead of showing such hypocrisy now, you should have shown your love by ensuring BJP’s victory here.
While Mevani hit back and said that ‘BJP ministers are upset because their party could not win here despite spending several crores of rupees. Despite being warmly welcomed, Vishwakarma insulted the villagers. Significantly, in the elections held on December 1 and 5 for the 182-member Gujarat Assembly, the BJP had won a record 156 seats. While the Congress had to satisfy with just 17 wins. Dalit leader Mevani defeated Manibhai Vaghela of BJP by over 4,000 votes in Vadgam seat.
