To promote the recruitment of youth in the army, the government has brought the Agneepath scheme. Under this scheme, youth will get an opportunity to work in the Armed Services for 4 years. The government is calling this scheme a great step for the army and youth, while some people including the opposition parties are also criticizing this scheme.
Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi on Wednesday criticized the government’s Agneepath scheme. Rahul Gandhi said that when India is facing threats on two fronts, the Agneepath scheme affects the operations of our armed forces. The BJP government should stop compromising on the dignity, traditions, valor and discipline of the army.
Priyanka Gandhi asked why the BJP government is making army recruitment its laboratory. Is the long job of soldiers finding a burden on the government? The youth are saying that this 4-year rule is a hoax. Our ex-servicemen also disagree with this. There is no discussion on the sensitive issue related to army recruitment, nor is there any serious thinking, just arbitrariness.
The government has named the scheme as Agneepath, but the youths who join it will be called Agniveers. For recruitment in this scheme, the age of the youth will be between 17 years 6 months to 21 years. The youth will get an opportunity to serve in the Armed Services for a total of 4 years including the training period. Recruitment will be done as per the rules set by the army.
For the Agniveers, the government has announced a retirement. In this, in the first year, the youth will be kept on a monthly pay of 30 thousand rupees. With the facility of EPF / PPF, Agniveer will get Rs 4.76 lakh in the first year. By the fourth year, the salary will be 40 thousand rupees that is 6.92 lakh rupees annually.
Some allowances will also be available with the annual package, which will include risk and hardship, ration, dress and travel allowance. If disabled during service, full pay and interest for non-service period will also be available. ‘Service Fund’ will be exempted from Income Tax. Agniveer will not be entitled for gratuity and pensionary benefits. Agniveers will be provided a non-contributory life insurance cover of Rs 48 lakh for their term in the Indian Armed Forces.
