Punjab CM Meets Haryana CM To Discuss SYL Canal Row

The meeting between the Chief Ministers of Punjab and Haryana Bhagwant Mann and Manohar Lal regarding the construction of Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal is inconclusive.

Giving information about this, CM Manohar Lal has said that at present no solution has been found in the matter, while CM Bhagwant Mann, while giving information about the meeting, said that Haryana demanded the construction of SYL canal.

Mann Says- We have categorically denied that we do not have water

Mann said that ‘we have categorically denied that we do not have water’. On the other hand, the CM of Haryana said that he will give this information to the Union Water Ministry. Haryana has demanded the construction of the remaining 122 km of the canal under Punjab.

Experts watching Punjab and Haryana argue that after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) came to power in Punjab, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wants to surround the Punjab government. The attempt is that you could not make your entry in BJP ruled Haryana. Experts also say that Haryana wants water as per its availability in 1966, since then Punjab has lost a lot of groundwater and is not really in a position to provide water, because it is a political issue and BJP is challenging AAP.

After the State Reorganization Act 1966, the construction work of Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal started in April 1982. It was started by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in Kapuri village of Patiala. A 214 km long section was to be built, a 122 km stretch was to be built in Punjab and the remaining 92 km was to be built in neighboring Haryana.
