Self-Driving Taxis: Following authorization from California state regulators, the businesses Waymo and Cruise are now authorised to use driverless cars in San Francisco as for-hire ride-hailing services. However, local officials and citizens are protesting the choice since the automobiles are causing traffic congestion and interfering with the work of firefighters and police officers.
Self-Driving Taxis in San Francisco
The much-awaited vote took place amid disputes between the driverless taxi companies and certain citizens of the hilly city, which had been the subject of about six hours of public discussion on both sides of the issue. Among those who voiced reservations about the technology were local activists, San Francisco transportation officials, and first responders.
Waymo and Cruise’s operations are being expanded thanks to a 3-to-1 vote by the California Public Utilities Commission, which oversees self-driving cars in the state.
In other words, San Franciscans and visitors will be able to pay a charge to travel in a driverless taxi, bringing new automated competition to cab and ride hail drivers.
A few are against the move
Despite opposition from San Francisco city officials and many people, who claim that the autonomous vehicles have disturbed emergency situations and caused traffic jams throughout the city, the California Public Utilities Commission authorised the permits for Waymo and Cruise on Thursday.
