Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the 100 Smart Cities Mission in India on June 25, 2015.The National Smart Cities Mission is an urban rehabilitation and retrofitting initiative by the Government of India with the goal of creating sustainable, smart cities across the nation. The mission will be carried out by the Union Ministry of Urban Development in coordination with the state governments of the relevant cities. The initiative originally targeted 100 cities, and the projects had a 2019–2023 completion window. As of 2019, 11% of all projects were effectively completed. As of March 2022, 3577 projects out of the 6939 total projects that were bid have been finished, using 60,073 crore out of the 191,294 crore in total that had been tendered.

Core Infrastructural Elements of Smart City are as follows:
- Adequate water supply
- – Assured electricity supply
- – Sanitation including solid waste management
- – Efficient urban mobility and public transport
- – Affordable housing, especially for the poor
- – Robust IT connectivity and digitalisation
- – Good governance, especially e-governance and citizen participation
- – Sustainable environment
- – Safety and security of citizens, particularly women, children and the elderly Health and education
