Sri Lanka PM declares emergency as President Rajapaksa flees to Maldives

Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Wednesday declared an emergency and imposed a curfew in the western province of the country as protests intensified following President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s escape to the Maldives.

As security personnel stationed outside of Wickremesinghe’s home prepared to fire tear gas at protestors, a state of emergency was announced. The area near the PM’s house also started to see air patrols.

The Daily Mirror newspaper said that Wickremesinghe reportedly directed the security officers to detain anyone engaging in disorderly behaviour.

Protesters who scaled the wall to enter the Sri Lankan prime minister’s mansion in Colombo were dispersed by military officers using tear gas rounds.

Because the Prime Minister automatically assumes the presidency in the event that the President steps down, we want the PM to step down. The public wants them both gone. Police responded by firing tear gas shells. An ex-adviser to the Sri Lankan Foreign Affairs ministry claimed that army personnel had entered the country.

The Defence Ministry of Sri Lanka gave Gotabaya Rajapaksa complete permission to travel to the Maldives with his wife and two bodyguards, according to Sri Lankan authorities who verified this today.

On a Sri Lankan Air Force aircraft, Gotabaya arrived at Male’s Velana International Airport early this morning. The development was also confirmed by the Prime Minister’s Office.

Shortly later, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, the speaker of the island nation’s troubled parliament, said that Gotabaya still hadn’t submitted a letter of resignation.

Abeywardena stated, “We haven’t yet received President Gotabaya’s resignation, but we anticipate receiving one in a day.

After large protesters barged into his home on July 9, the 73-year-old went into hiding and declared his resignation for July 13.

The nation is experiencing a severe shortage of fuel and other necessities.
