Stock Market Update: Indian financial markets will remain closed today on account of Muharram, a day after mixed trading results for domestic assets. At the same time, Asian stocks have registered a fall in early Tuesday. Investors have turned their attention to US inflation data and the course of Federal Reserve policy.
On Monday, Indian equity benchmarks extended their gains after recording a third consecutive weekly rise, defying broader global stock market gloom.
The 30-share BSE gauge closed at 58,853.07, up 465.14 points, or 0.80 per cent. During the day, it was up 546.97 points or 0.93 percent at 58,934.90. The NSE Nifty closed at 17,525.10, up 127.60 points or 0.73 per cent.
Both the benchmark indices marked their third straight weekly gains on Friday, rising 1.4 per cent each, driven by the return of foreign investors to the Indian capital markets after a gap of nine months.
But on the other hand, the rupee weakened sharply on Monday as the dollar rose on hopes of the Fed being more aggressive following solid US jobs data.
