Tata: Tata Motors displayed its 1.2-litre and 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol direct injection (TGDi) engines at Auto Expo 2023. These engines will make their debut with the Curvv and Sierra, respectively. The fact that these new engines can run on an E20 fuel blend and are BS6 2.0 certified is more noteworthy.
New engines by Tata
The new engines from Tata are more rigidly built and made of aluminium. In addition, they are reported to have superior fuel efficiency and improved performance when compared to the current generation of engines. Additionally, dual cam phasing, which is effectively variable valve timing and affects how cams react at specific revolutions, will be included in Tata’s new engines. They will also receive an integrated exhaust manifold in the cylinder head and a variable oil pump.
Additionally, a water-cooled variable geometry turbocharger will be added to the new TGDi engines, according to Tata, which will improve torque at lower rev ranges for faster acceleration. By putting new valve trains and timing chains on these engines, which will prolong their useful lives, Tata has also been able to lower the purchase price of these engines.

All about the new 1.2-litre engine
The three-cylinder, 1.2-litre direct injection turbo-petrol engine has a displacement of 1,198cc. It generates 225Nm of torque between 1,700 and 3,500 rpm and 125hp at 5,000 rpm. It is anticipated that it will be connected to both a manual and an automatic transmission. In comparison, the existing 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine produces 170Nm between 1,750 and 4,000 rpm and 120hp at 5,500 rpm.
The Tata Curvv’s ICE variant, which is expected to go on sale in 2024, will be the first to use the 1.2 TGDi engine. If doing so makes financial sense for Tata, it might also spread to Nexon and Altroz.
All about the new 1.5-litre engine
A four-cylinder, 1,498cc engine with direct injection and turbocharging powers the larger 1.5 TGDi vehicle. It produces 280Nm of torque between 2,000 and 3,500 rpm and 170 horsepower at 5,000 rpm. It will also be paired with manual and automatic transmissions, just as the smaller 1.2 unit.
With the ICE version of the Sierra, which will be on sale by 2025, Tata will introduce this 1.5 TGDi engine. Soon after, it will be installed in the Harrier and Safari facelifts and may even be made available with the Curvv.
