Tesla: Recently, Tesla unveiled its new “Driver Drowsiness Warning” feature, which keeps an eye on drivers’ attentiveness by using the cabin camera. Tesla has already come under fire for not giving driver monitoring enough priority in its sophisticated driver-assist capabilities. Previously, drivers had to make very small movements to alert the system that their hands were still on the wheel because Tesla could only detect torque applied to the steering wheel. Read on to learn more about this feature.
Tesla’s Driver Drowsiness Feature
Tesla used the steering wheel’s torque sensor as its main means of driver monitoring. The carmaker only recently, beginning in 2021, started employing the cabin-facing camera to make sure that drivers are paying attention and aren’t using handheld devices while operating a vehicle.
Tesla has now gone one step further with the addition of a new function known as the “Driver Drowsiness Warning,” which measures the driver’s level of attentiveness by counting their blinks and yawns.
How does it work?
“Facial characteristics as well as driving behaviour to determine patterns indicative of drowsiness” will now be monitored by the camera software.
According to Tesla, a notice will appear on the touchscreen “in the cards area” when the company detects driver fatigue. An audio alert is also included.
When the car is travelling less than 60 km/h, the feature will automatically deactivate.
