Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu on Friday suspended TMC MP Santanu Sen for snatching papers from the hands of Union IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in Rajya Sabha on Thursday. Sen has been suspended for the remaining period of the monsoon session after a motion moved by the government was passed by the House.
Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu has suspended TMC MP Santanu Sen from the Rajya Sabha for the rest of the Monsoon Session on Friday, a day after tearing up a statement prepared by Union Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on the Pegasus issue.
He was suspended for rest of the monsoon session after MoS Parliamentary Affairs V Muraleedharan moved a motion to suspend him. The motion was adopted by the voice vote and he was suspended while other TMC MPs objected to the move.
“I’m deeply distressed by the course of events in House. Unfortunately, proceedings of the House hit a new low with papers being snatched from the Minister and torn into pieces. Such actions are clear assault on our Parliamentary democracy,” said Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu.
“Santanu Sen, please withdraw from House. Allow the House to function,” Naidu said and adjourned the House till 12 PM following an uproar that started during TMC MP Derek O’Brien’s statement over yesterday’s incident.
