The total number of people infected with the corona virus has increased to 55 in the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras. Tamil Nadu Health Secretary J. Radhakrishnan gave this information.
According to him, the tests are being conducted in 19 hostels of IITM campus. The infection rate is high in a hostel which has students from many states.
Here, the Tamil Nadu government has directed the state health department to test a minimum of 25,000 samples for the virus. Presently 18,000 samples are tested daily.
In view of 55 people testing positive in three days, the state government held a high level meeting of health department officials. State Health Secretary Radhakrishnan said in a statement that the Health Department has called for strict adherence to the Covid-19 protocol.
Apart from this, the Tamil Nadu government has announced that wearing a mask is mandatory and those who do not wear a mask will have to pay a fine of Rs 500. Speaking to IANS, State Health Minister Ma Subramaniam said, “The increase in Covid-19 cases at IIT Madras is being studied in detail. The state health department is closely monitoring the situation and will take necessary steps accordingly.”
