The micro-blogging site Twitter has released a ‘transparency report’ regarding the handling of complaints from users in the country between May 26, 2021, and June 25, 2021, as required under the new IT law.
The US-based company said it has received six complaints of ‘Abuse / Harassment’ prompting the platform to take action against 38 accounts. Twitter also received 38 complaints on ‘Defamation’ triggering action against 87 accounts.
It also took action against one account after receiving a complaint on ‘Misinformation / Synthetic and Manipulated Media.
Outlining the proactive measures taken by the platform across the world, Twitter said it had taken down over 18,385 accounts with content linked to child sexual exploitation, non-consensual nudity, among others.
It also took down 4,179 accounts that promoted or glorified terrorism.
Twitter said internal tools and other initiatives have helped monitor the complaints and taking action.
Twitter informed that going forward, it will publish the India report on a monthly basis and is committed to making improvements over time, based on feedback received from the government, or in accordance with internal changes that allow the platform to provide more granular data.
Twitter becomes the third major social media firm after Facebook and Google to release a report in keeping with the new rules that triggered its conflict with the Central government.
