Volkswagen Taigun: Special edition of the SUV to hit the market in June, will compete with MG Astor, all we know so far

Volkswagen Taigun: With the addition of the 1.5 TSI manual engine in the top-tier GT Plus trim and the 1.5 TSI DSG in the base GT trim, the Volkswagen Taigun will have a total of four 1.5 TSI variations by June 2023.

Specifications of Volkswagen Taigun

At introduction, the Taigun offered buyers a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with 150 horsepower and 250 Newton meters of torque in both manual and automatic configurations. However, the manual was only available in the GT trim level, while the DSG was only available in the GT Plus trim level. Volkswagen has expanded the availability and appeal of the performance-oriented Taigun 1.5 TSI by equipping both variants with a manual and DSG transmission.

This powerplant is also available on the Volkswagen Virtus GT Plus, albeit only with the DSG transmission. Now also available with a 6-speed manual transmission.

The carmaker has introduced the ‘GT Edge Limited Collection’

In addition to the new models, the carmaker has introduced the ‘GT Edge Limited Collection’, which adds two new paint schemes to the top-tier 1.5 GT Plus: Deep Black Pearl and Carbon Steel Matte.

There are two new editions dubbed the Trail Concept and the Sport Concept for the lesser GT trim. The Trail Concept (displayed in white) features robust decals on the rear three-quarters of the SUV, as well as a black roof rack and alloy wheels. Alternatively, the Sport Concept features a TSI sticker on the rear doors and a set of decals reminiscent of a checkered flag on the lower halves of the doors and the fender. Expect additional editions of the inferior 1.0 TSI variants in the future.

In addition, all variants of the Taigun will receive the Lava Blue paint colour that was previously available on the larger Tiguan, as was the case with the Virtus. All of these modifications serve to spruce up the Volkswagen Taigun in the face of fierce competition, including the upcoming new Honda SUV, Tata Curvv, Kia Seltos, and Hyundai Creta facelifts. It will not receive any more mechanical updates in terms of engines, transmissions, or electrification for the remainder of its current generation, so updates such as these will maintain the model current.

Volkswagen Taigun cost and competitors

The Taigun is in competition with the Skoda Kushaq, Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hybrid, and MG Astor.

Ex-showroom, India, the Taigun GT manual costs Rs 16.26 lakh and the GT Plus DSG costs Rs 19.06 lakh. Expect the GT DSG to bear a slight premium over the manual transmission, while the GT Plus manual transmission will be slightly less expensive than the DSG model. Since its introduction, Volkswagen has sold an average of 2,000 VW Taiguns per month, attesting to the success of this model.
